How we use AI

AI is a tool. We try to use it honestly.

We don't curate or create any of the content in the app. Coral is a set of tools and workflows where you bring or create the content, then use LLMs and various APIs to augment and extend it.

What we use AI for

  • Translate text from one language to another.
  • Extract vocabulary from your cards.
  • Create interactive conversations and listening content.
  • Generate audio (text-to-speech). Speech-to-text is currently just your phone's built-in capability.
  • Give feedback on messages you write.
  • Automatically generate cards from a few inputs.

Where it helps, and where it doesn't

This all fits with what we currently feel are the real strengths of AI, and its real limits.

Where we think AI shines

  • Extending, augmenting, and summarizing pre-existing, high-quality content.
  • Giving you the flexibility to tailor content to yourself, whenever you want.

Where it absolutely can't

  • Have genuine, natural conversations.
  • Consistently guide learners by creating highly-targeted lessons or progressions.
  • Accurately assess learners, giving precise feedback and recommendations.
  • Self-correct when it's wrong.
  • Care about you, or provide any kind of engaging, authentic human experience.
